Make a call

Bring a conversation into voice or video, choose your network privacy, and understand the controls you see along the way.

Start talking

  1. Open your contact

Tap the call button in the chat, or call from the Calls screen. If you are new to Auris, add a contact first and compare safety numbers.

  2. Let the call connect

Auris finds a network path and checks the encryption setup before releasing media on the default path. Your contact may need a moment to wake and answer.

  3. Use the in-call controls

Mute your microphone, choose the speaker, or turn on your camera. Auris asks before enabling your camera. You can turn it off again during the call.

Choose whether to hide your IP

Turn on Hide my IP on calls when you want the media path to go through a relay. Lockdown also selects this behavior. This keeps your direct network address off that path to the other caller.

The relay carries encrypted media and sees the connected endpoints, timing and volume. A direct or relayed route can work better depending on the network.

On a difficult network

Auris adapts video to available bandwidth and uses audio error correction and loss concealment to help with missing packets. Connection recovery responds to changes of network.

  • If speech keeps breaking up, try turning video off to reduce the traffic the call needs.
  • Check the microphone and camera permissions if a device is not sending sound or video.
  • If Auris cannot reach the service, see connection troubleshooting.

If a security check fails

A failed check means Auris could not establish the requested protection. End the attempt, check that both people are using the current beta, and verify the contact again if Auris reports a changed safety number.

An optional, visibly labeled classical fallback can be enabled separately. It keeps transport encryption but omits the extra post-quantum-keyed frame layer. Either peer can require the stricter mode. See the call protocol for the exact checks and fallback behavior.

Use captions

The normal caption path processes speech on the device. Optional cloud captions are off by default and require your explicit choice to use Apple's processing service. The other caller cannot turn that choice on for you.

Captions can misrecognize speech, so confirm details that matter. For background ringing and alerts, see notification settings.
