How Auris works

A private conversation,
from the first hello.

You choose the person. Auris brings together identity, encryption and real-time media to help you connect. Here is the journey.

Ready to use Auris? Start here →

Start with an identity of your own

Your device creates an Auris ID and private keys. Share an ID, QR code or invitation to start a conversation. Compare safety numbers with your contact to check that you have the intended identity keys.

Give the conversation its own keys

The first message establishes shared key material using a hybrid of classical and post-quantum cryptography. As messages follow, the session advances its keys. Your devices encrypt and open the conversation.

This design aims to protect against both present-day interception and future quantum decryption of recorded traffic. The technical reference explains the exact construction, assumptions and ongoing proof work.

Follow a message through the protocol →

Deliver the message with fewer identifiers

Auris routes encrypted messages and queues them when your contact is offline. Sealed sends remove the explicit sender field, and per-contact queues omit an owner ID from their mailbox records.

The service still handles connection, timing and routing information. The observer ledger shows exactly which information each route exposes.

Turn a message into a voice

Tap call and Auris brings the conversation into real time. Audio and video adapt to available bandwidth. Connection recovery responds when your network changes.

The default call path checks the peer's transport fingerprint through the encrypted session and adds encryption to the media frames. Media waits for those checks and keys. An optional, visibly labeled classical fallback requires a separate choice.

Keep control after the conversation

Choose how people find you, what your notifications show, and whether calls use a relay. Set a disappearing-message timer, and give stored history its own protection with biometrics, a passphrase, or both.

History protection is selected separately from the privacy presets. Disappearing messages control retention on cooperating devices; someone you share with can still keep a copy.

The next chapter

Our ambition is a more natural private conversation, with less information exposed along the way. Research into authentication, recovery and private access patterns helps us examine the next generation of Auris.
