Choose your privacy settings
Start with a preset, then adjust discovery, notifications, call routing and local access to fit your life.
Three presets, plus Custom
The following reflects the September source. Existing installations can have overrides; check the values shown in Settings. A changed switch can make the active preset read Custom.
| Setting | Standard | Enhanced | Lockdown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local message notification | Sender, no preview | Sender, no preview | Generic |
| Directory discovery | By Auris ID | Invite-only | Invite-only |
| Calls | Direct allowed | Direct allowed | Always relay |
| App screen lock | Off | After 5 minutes away | After 1 minute away |
| Third-party keyboards | Allowed | Blocked in Auris | Blocked in Auris |
| Verified contact required to send | No | No | Yes |
| Media reveal | Automatic | Automatic | Tap to reveal |
| Anonymous-queue wake token | Included if available | Included if available | Omitted |
Applying Enhanced or Lockdown switches optional call-quality telemetry off. Applying Lockdown also enables cover traffic; that is an apply-time action rather than part of preset matching. Cover traffic has bandwidth and battery costs and does not establish anonymity.
Choose these controls separately
- Read receipts and typing: review their own global or per-contact settings.
- History protection: choose what releases the stored-history key independently of the screen-lock timer.
- System notifications: Lockdown removes the optional anonymous-queue wake token, while ordinary directory registration still provides available APNs and VoIP tokens.
Auris Lockdown is an app preset. Apple's system Lockdown Mode is a separate operating-system setting.
App lock and history protection are different
The app lock is a screen gate using system device-owner authentication, including passcode fallback. Its timer applies after leaving the app; an active call is exempt. It does not add a separate encryption factor.
The history vault has its own key-release modes, including current biometrics without passcode fallback and an Auris passphrase. Choose that separately when you need the history key to require more than the device passcode.
Choosing a relayed call path
A relay carries encrypted media and hides your direct network address from the other caller on that path. The relay operator still observes network endpoints, timing and volume. A relay can improve or worsen a route's quality; latency is a property of the actual path, not just whether it is direct.
The presets retain the same end-to-end encryption design. Any separately enabled classical call fallback is an explicit, visibly labelled setting with its own limits; a preset name is not evidence that every optional setting has a particular value.
